Despite being one of the most memorable actresses of all time, Marilyn Monroe struggled early in her career. She was signed by studios, then dropped, then signed again. She did not have a leading role until 1952 in "Don't Bother to Knock". This performance convinced the studio she was able to act in starring roles. "Niagara" followed in 1953, and she proved she could lead a big-budget film. John Wayne worked as a prop man for Fox until winning his first starring role in the western "The Big Trail"(1930, but it was the 1939 movie "Stagecoach" that established him as a star.
